Flowers and bouquets are probably one of the most popular kinds of memorial tattoo – second only to lettering. I have a lot of clients who come in for something like a bouquet of two or three flowers, where each flower represents a person. It might be a flower that person loved, a birth flower, or something similar.
In my view it is a wonderful way to immortalise a symbol of someone you love. Flowers and bouquets also make for beautiful, graceful and feminine designs, which matters a great deal to many women – especially when it is done in the fineline style.
2. Fineline lettering tattoos – names, dates and personal quotes
Lettering tattoos – a date, a phrase or a name – are without doubt the most popular kind of memorial tattoo I see, and for good reason. It is a direct way to honour someone by carrying their name or initials on your body. It could also be a significant date: a birthday, a wedding anniversary or something similar.
It can also be done more implicitly, for example by choosing a phrase the person you want to remember often said. A lot of people prefer that.
You can then decide for yourself whether to use a beautiful custom typeface drawn by the tattoo artist, or the person’s own handwriting. I have had many clients choose to have a sentence tattooed exactly as their parents or grandparents wrote it, which adds another layer of meaning. I think that is a lovely idea.
3. Fineline ornamental tattoos – discreet and feminine designs
You might be wondering: “what is a fineline ornament?” A fineline ornament is a small, jewellery-like tattoo that does not necessarily depict anything concrete. It might simply be a beautiful pattern of fine lines and dots.
These tattoos are very neutral. I have had families, for example, who chose an ornament as a shared family tattoo, because it had to work for both men and women and did not carry an explicit meaning. Some men are not keen on flower tattoos, and there an ornament is a good alternative if the whole family wants to take part.
These tattoos are also popular among women who want to celebrate their femininity, or who simply want something beautiful on their body.
4. Star sign tattoos in the fineline style – astrological symbols and personal meaning
Star sign tattoos are incredibly popular, because everyone has a star sign, and it is an obvious way to commemorate someone in an implicit way. Star signs can look really beautiful in the fineline style – and I have made a great many of them.
Some choose to have the constellation itself immortalised, others go for just the symbol, and some have a design that combines the two. There is no right or wrong here – it is a matter of taste and of what feels right.
For many women, just the symbol on its own is a popular choice – if your brother is a Leo, for example, and you want it as small as possible while keeping the symbolism, you can go for the symbol without the constellation, which would otherwise take up more space.
Sometimes clients combine elements too – a bouquet with the star sign and a little lettering, say – to create something larger and more complex. That works really well if you want something with a bit more going on.
5. Symbols and objects – meaningful personal fineline tattoos
This kind of tattoo can be almost anything. If your father was a sailor, for example, an anchor could be the obvious memorial. Or if he was a blacksmith, you might choose a hammer or something similar. The possibilities here are endless, and it is a good option if you want something more discreet than, say, a name.
I once tattooed a tractor on a woman because her father was a farmer. It was such a lovely idea, and it shows that what matters most is that the tattoo means something particular to you.
How to choose the perfect memorial tattoo – size, placement and design
When you choose a memorial tattoo, it is important to think about what matters to you. Consider how big it should be, and where on the body it should be placed. Should it be visible all the time, so that others can see it? Then the top of the forearm is a good placement. Or should it be a little more discreet? In that case the inside of the biceps is a good choice.
Think about who should be able to see the tattoo – yourself or others?
Should the tattoo be big or small, simple or complex? If you have many memories or people you want to combine, you can consider mixing some of the elements mentioned, so that it becomes a unique combination.
